Group Travel Considerations: Stay True to You

It is always fun, fabulous and exciting to get a group of friends together and travel to far-flung destinations. However, differing travel expectations and desires can definitely be challenging. Establishing ground rules and expectations up front ensures friendships remain in tact and fun is had by all.

The below travel considerations should be evaluated prior to (and during) group travels.

1. When traveling with a group, or traveling solo for that matter, research the destination and identify the activities that are must-do's and nice-to-do's. Always hold true to your must-do's regardless of group activities. While eating at the fanciest restaurant in town may be a nice-to-do, visiting historically significant sites may be a must-do on your list.

Bottom line, understand your drivers for visiting the destination and plan accordingly. For example, if you are visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras then your drivers are likely Bourbon Street, dining and Mardi Gras, opposed to a visiting to Lafayette Cemetery or St. Louis Cathedral.

2. Communicate your list of must-do's to the group.

3. Compare your list of must-do's with the goals of the group. Where there is overlap, enjoy those activities as a group. Where there is no overlap, make it clear to the group that you will explore separately.

4. Invite group members interested in your activities to join, but make it clear that you have a strict itinerary.

5. When striking out alone, make sure members of the group know where you are going and whom you are going with. Safety above all else.

At a minimum, the above considerations will help you manage expectations and will hopefully result in a successful experience.
